THE RABBITRY
I have been raising mini rex rabbits since August 2006 and brought my initial herd of 10 rabbits with me when I moved from Lafayette , Indiana , to Fairbanks , Alaska , in June 2007. Currently, I have 18 holes, and I hope to expand to 24 holes by summer 2009. My rabbits are kept in a 12' x 12' room off the garage of my house, which is controlled for temperature, humidity, and photoperiod.
My 18 holes are comprised of four tri-stacks of cages. Each cage measures 24" deep x 36" wide x 18" high, and has urine guards on three sides and an under-cage litter tray. Each cage also has a 14" wide x 24" long mat dragon grass matt to chew and lay on, three 10" deep x 14.5" plastic Mighty Mat foot rests to keep their feet off the wire bottom, and a 8" deep x 12" wide x 8" high wood house for security. In addition, each cage also has a 9" wide external hay rack, a 32 ounce water bottle, and a 5.5" wide kleen-screen j-feeder.
I have focused on breeding tricolor and harlequin mini rex as I really like their color and pattern. I am working on building a strong line, and just produced my first litters in December 2007. My rabbits tend to do well at shows, and color, fur, and pattern is the current strength of my line. With my breeding program, I am going to work on type and hope to produce some champion rabbits in 2009.
My rabbits get fed twice a day and checked on two to three other times in the evening. I feed my rabbits a measured amount of Purina Advanced Nutrition Show Formula pellets at each feeding, fill their hay rack with grass hay from a local producer in Fairbanks , and check/fill their water bottles. Each night, the rabbits also get a treat (an Oxbow papaya/pineapple chewable tablet) which helps to prevent hair blockages. During summer months and occasionally during the rest of the year, the rabbits also get a treat of parsley, cilantro, green-leaf lettuce, or raspberry leaves. I also clean the litter pans once a week, and the cages and trays are disinfected with Vanodine at this time.
